Contract services - Downgrading

When I posted my SOA, someone mentioned contacting my contract phone provider (who I'm tied to by contract for another 13 months) and our cable company (who I'm tied to by contract for another 8 months) and asking if we could downgrade before the end of the contract time, because we were having financial difficulties.

Does this work? Is it worth asking or will I get laughed at?!

It would be a great help to us to downgrade.

  • Well I can only talk from my own experiences but you should be OK. They are more than happy to let you upgrade so it costs you more so you should be able to downgrade!

What they might do is offer you a reduced rate for X amount of months. Weigh the offer up. If it's not what you want say no. Don't let them pressure you into a deal you aren't happy with. :)

I believe that with regards to your mobile phone contract you can opt to go to the lowest tarif available for the remaining 13 months of the contract. Ask them about it. Good luck
  • i tryed this with my internet provider and they wanted to charge me £40 for the privalge... beware :)
  • Was that £40, one off?

yeah it depends who you're with. my oh is with three (18 month contract) and when we asked to downgrade they said we have to wait til we've been with them 9 months. even then, they said we have to pay £25 'admin charge' or extend the contract another 6 months!

  • Well, just for the record, contract phone is with Orange. Cable is with Telewest (now Virgin Media).

I approached Vodafone about downgrading and they said yeah no problem. I was on a package payng £70 per month and dropped to the lowest package which is about £15 per month. I have been with them a long time though and never missed a payment. Don't know whether that makes a difference.

You could definitely downgrade your cable. We are with NTL (now Virgin media) and have upgraded and downgraded withhin the inital 12 month contract.
