NatWest Unpaid item fees

Hello everyone,

We have been on our DMP for about 7 months now and all is going well - no missed payments and debt reducing nicely - or so I thought until I received a loan statement from NatWest this morning. The bank has added over £4,000 to our loan account for "unpaid item fees" despite the fact that they agreed to the DMP (after a bit of a battle) and have received over £1,000 in payments from us since the DMP has been in place. Does anyone have any advice on how I should go about re-claiming these charges? And am I likely to get the charges reversed.

Thanks in advance!

  • I'm not an expert but when we started on our DMP the Post Office kept adding late payment fees.
On the advice on here I sent a recorded delivery letter restating my position and saying that they were now adding to my debt and asking them to stop. I sent it to all the addresses I could find for the Post office including the MD. I got a reply acknowledging my 'complaint' and soon after they stopped the charges and refunded the previous ones although didn't accept liability.

Interestingly we had a big loan with Nat West and after a few months they stopped interest and never applied any charges at all. its a bit of a lottery how you are dealt with by these companies. Furthermore we have settled at 55% of the debt just a year after they accepted the DMP.

I hope they start playing ball but I reckon a firm letter may be in order.
    Good Luck:)

  • I can't speak for your exact situation, but I had a similar one with Lloyds TSB about 12 years ago. I had an overdraft with them, and after a breakup, made arrangements to pay off the overdraft at £50/month. On making my first payment, I discovered that they had charged me around £60 in charges for unfreezing the account, applying interest, accepting the payment, and freezing it again. I immediately wrote to them saying that it was counter productive for me to continue paying a debt which was only going up, and I therefore wouldn't be making any further payments until we reached an agreement that would result in the amount owing being reduced.

I never heard anything back from them, and that overdraft is now long since written off.
