Employer used wrong tax code

Evening - just after a little advice from those who know.

Just done my SA online and, even though I am PAYE and claim nothing in relief (used to hence the SA form) I've discovered that my employer has used the incorrect tax code for the past year which now leaves me with a tax liability. It's not too much and I have paid it but really want to know if I have any cause for complaint to my employers?

The (very helpful) person at HMRC who I spoke to this morning told me that my employer had been sent my tax code electronically and gave me the date and time of this message. I, on the other hand, didn't receive my paper copy (wasn't expecting one so didn't notice it's non-appearance) and so was unable to do anything about this.

It's also the case that my employer has been using an incorrect tax code for this financial year which has already accrued me a tax liablity!

I'd welcome some advice about my strategy with my employer.

Thanks

Mmm - not sure what difference the actual codes are makes but I am currently on 857L and should be on 747L. Last year I was on 747L and should have been 647L until the change.

If those are on your monthly payslips then it doesn't give too much wriggle room? Simply have a word with payroll and ask them to identify when / where it went wrong. And to close any gaps which allowed this to happen. Also if anyone else is likely to be affected.

Unless there's a bit of a track record of PAYE errors - HMRC won't be much help.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

Thanks - as I said I have already paid the liability but do need to check why payroll didn't implement the correct code last year and this year. Do I wade in with indignant outrage (how I feel today) or approach from a !!!!!! happened view (perhaps how I may feel on Monday)?

Does my employer have any obligation to repay me? Probably not I suppose is the answer.

Your employer has an obligation to apply the tax code issued by HMRC. On the correct tax code being applied your tax due should be adjusted so that you have paid the correct amount of tax for the year.
Did you really mean to put loose?
Lose: no longer possess, not to retain, unable to find
Loose: not firmly or tightly fixed in place

I would approach from Monday's viewpoint!

They don't have to repay you ..... but you never know! I'd temper the approach by your knowledge of how accurate their payroll usually is.

Also bear in mind you would've received a revised tax code also and didn't notice the difference.....

Normally yes but in this case it appears that the OP did not.

what was the history of these taxcode

    what was it in 2009-10
when did it change in 2010-11

had you previously any reason to have any allowances that would have raised your tax code?
