council tax stopped our direct debits

we moved house in july and through no fault of my own might i add (but believe other half is to blame:rolleyes: )

i as a general rule sort all the bills, shopping kids stuff etc and basically everything but mortgage and council tax they have always come from his account i just make sure everything else is in order. well we moved in july and have just recieved a letter from council tax stating we owe them just over £900 and we have to pay asap when i phoned them and said we pay by direct debit they said we dont as they cancelled it in july when they had a phone call from new owners of old house to pay thier council tax, now obviously my oh forget to phone them and give them new address (slap wrist) but surely they shouldnt of cancelled the direct debit. and yes i know we have to pay it im just having a moan because its a nuisance when i thought we were paying it and now i have to use what little savings we had manage to make and pay them off.
ok mini moan over for the day and moral of the story, dont forget to phone council tax people when you move.....

I'm surprised that they did not write to inform you that they had cancelled it. I am also surprised that they left it so long to notify you! I would have thought that once 1 payment had been missed, they would be on your case writing to you asking you to come to an arrangement, then you would have noticed earlier!! On those grounds I would argue that they should let you pay over a period of time.
  • i tried asking for payments over a period of time but they said if it wasnt paid by april then they would fine us, they also said they did write but to the old address as we hadnt given them the new address, i know its our fault really (or other halfs actually, he gets the dog bed tonight) just felt like venting my frustation.
    thanks anyway

The direct debit would have been paid against the council tax reference number, changing tyour Council Tax account would have changed your Council Tax reference number.

We have problems with the DD in my dept (Council Tax) with this quite regularly and in most cases the banks wont change the reference number without a new dd mandate and stop honouring dd requests.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
