Hi MSErs!
Was wondering if anyone can help! On massively strict budget this month as we have loads of bills and insurances to pay, and I have £8 in pinecone vouchers to buy necessities for the week. I was hoping someone could suggest meal ideas with the following ingredients!
I have:
a large bag of plain flour
about 7oz SR flour
Sultanas (large bag)
Tin mandarin segments
Pack bacon (Frozen)
3 eggs
Not much milk (1 pint skimmed)
Tub clover butter 500g
6 sausages
big pack cheese
fresh parmesan
2 tins baked beans
3 tins tomatoes
This might seem like a nice list of ingredients, but it is left over from our recent holiday (A lot of it would have been thrown away!)
Would be grateful for any suggestions.
I also have mixed spice, mixed herbs and chilli in the cupboard, along with gravy granules.
Thanks!

From a quick glance:
Toad in the hole (sausages, flour, egg)
Pancakes sweet/savoury (cheese, bacon, sausage, fruit)
Omelette
Scrambled egg
Scones (sweet/cheese)
Muffins
If you could buy a bag of pasta and a small bag of potatoes from your budget then you could pretty much use all of the other ingredients with them.0 -
I second the toad in the hole and would suggest a nice flan/quiche with some of the eggs and a couple of rashers of bacon. The tomatoes and another rasher or two could be used for a pasta sauce of you have an onion kicking around.
What about some sultana scones if you have a raising agent? I'd be tempted to just use the SR flour and see how they come out.
I rather like baked beans with some cheese grated in it. Lovely with a baked spud or just some chips.0 -
have you any suet? and an onion? you could make a bacon and onion suet pudding. Pancakes for the kids?
Toad in the hole.
i make a pasta sauce with a onion, tin of tomatos, pinch of chili flakes (powder would do) and some chopped bacon.Cats don't have owners - they have staff!!DFW Long Hauler Supporter No 1500 -
If you've got some Trex or similar, you could make plate pies, making shortcrust pastry with the plain flour. The beauty of them is that they don't need a lot of filling and you can even fill them with leftovers. You could use a couple of the sausages fried with a bit of onion and chopped with beans to make one or use grated cheese and sauteed chopped onion mixed with a bit of thick white sauce and well seasoned.
A few ideas in this thread
Put the drained mandarins in the bottom of a cake tin and top with a sponge mix made with the SR flour or make an easy fruit loaf/boiled fruit cake0 -
Thanks folks, some great ideas!
I made Toad in the hole which was delicious, and I made it with just 1 egg! UNlike delia's recipe which uses 4!!!!
I also made a pasta sauce and froze it-thanks to the suggester! I used ketchup instead of puree-which tastes quite nice!
I loved the mandarin upside down cake idea. But the children have chicken pox, and wanted to make jelly in moulds, so we popped the mandarins in that.
I'm afraid I haven't got trex, or suet. I am not sure what they are!
Think I will make pancakes with my spotty LOs today-need to keep them entertained. Had a hellish night with them writhing around itching to bits. They had all their medication and it still only let them (And me!) sleep for about 1.5 hours at a time. It took me back to when they were newborn.
Cheers all!

hi
this is not about the food
when mine were younger and suffering from chicken pox the chemist reccomended aqueous cream with menthol, worked a treat and didn't cost much0 -
Cheese and bacon pasties served with baked beans...scrummy!
Use the marg but make sure that it is ice cold when you rub it into the flour - double the amount of flour to marg, eg. 12oz flour, 6oz marg.
With the sultanas make some teabread - 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of sultanas.
Brew a strong cup of tea and soak the sultanas in it, when it's cold mix everything together, pop in a loaf tin or even muffin cases and cook til a skewer/knife comes out clean at 160C.
(You can pop chopped walnuts, mixed spice and bananas in this recipe...it's really versatile, but make sure that the fruity/nutty ingredients come to 1 cup.)Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage.0 -
Just saw an avert about a 'Graze' snack box for free! You just have to text them, but I cant remember the number
Hopefully someone will be along with it for you.
(I havent tried it myself but its a box of healthy nibbles which your little, spotty people might enjoy especially as its delivered to your door!) hth:o0
