FB is not the devil at all as we are all in control of what we say and who can see it. NEVER add anyone you work with and keep your page private!EdJRobinson wrote: »Exactly. The first one doesnt bother me now because I learned to change my attitude at work. The second one bothers me because I shouldn't of changed careers in the first place. The third one really annoys me because I was in line for a promotion literally the week I got sacked and I loved that job. One little rant after a bad couple of weeks and someones inability to do their job properly cost me. Facebook is the devil!0

My page is private and most of the people I had on there from work were trusted friends of mine. Just one person decided that management must be made aware of it. I told them that my page was set to private in my appeal and asked them what the difference is between me putting it on a private forum that only my friends can see or going down the pub and moaning about it all, where strangers can hear what I'm saying?0

Anyway if your page was private what did they use as proof?0

Exactly though. How many people have you heard of that got sacked for venting their frustrations about work down the pub?
They used screen grabs from someone's iPhone.0

Also, I was in my last job for 3.5 years and when asked to provide 2 references on applications, can I put down the HR department (for the company standard reference) and my supervisor (who knows how I work, strengths etc) as my job before this last one is completely irrelevant to any job Im ever going to apply for?
 Thanks!
No job is completely irrelevant even if in a completely different area. The basic information such as length of service, sick time and disciplinaries etc are always of interest.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

I saw them but wasn't sure who exactly it was. I had my suspicions. The Ops Manager, who I had my appeal hearing with, let slip who it was. I was shocked!0

That is a bit like saying all baseball bats are dangerous weapons. They are fine if you just play baseball with them as intended!
More seriously though, you need to be certain of your previous employers reference policies. Quite a lot of companies these days will only confirm that your were employed from X to Y. Also, it may well be possible for the supervisor you trust to respond directly. Not all firms insist on references being send via HR. If you have a friend who runs a business ask them to write for references as if you were going to work for their firm and see what comes back.
If it proves a problem then you are stuck with trying to find some casual job for a while that isn't bothered about taking up references (and there are far more than people think) or working as a volunteer for a while then using them as your reference.0

Sorry to hear about your difficulties and I hope you manage to sort something out work wize. People at work are not trusted friends-none of them. They are people that you share the same room with all day and that is it . Learn from that Facebook thing and dont share anything with anyone from work either verbally or on Facebook that you wouldnt be prepared to say to the main bosses face.
People at work will stab you in the back and you've learned the hard way.0
