  • Hi - Just a couple of things that might help. I would pop over to the Old Style Board to see if youcan reduce your food budget.

Unfortunately, the going out will probably have to stop for a while :( I would recommend Tesco/Asda or Ebay for clothes.

Is there a cheaper option to Tiscali? Are there any pay as you go dial ups still around?

Anything you can sell on ebay? CD's etc?

I'll add my four penneth if I may:

Rent - £ 30.00 (HB pay every weeks so this is shortfall to make up my half)
    Tiscali BB £ 15.00
    BT £ 10.50
    TV Lic £ 5.70
GE £ 7.50 As above, whats this?
    Cont Ins £ 5.00
Gas £ 20.00 Put a jumper and socks on instead of the heating. When your feeling cold set yourself 30 minute goals to not put the heating on. When you feel you can't go on put it on then or just heat up one room instead of the whole house.
Elec £ 22.00 Plan what you want to watch on TV and read the rest of the time. Sit by candlelight in the evening. Don't leave anything on standby.
Water £ 17.00 If you went on a water meter and were careful this would go down. Mines £7 a month.
    Comet £ 10.00
Council £ 20.00 (paying back dep they loaned us to move in here)
    C/Lens £ 8.00
Car Ins £ 16.00 Could you do without a car?
Nappies etc £15.00 Could you try reusable nappies? Some nappy companies will give you one as a free sample so you can give it a try.
DD Savings £ 25.00 Stop this for now and put it towards your debt. You can always start it again when the debt is paid up.
Food £100.00 Start cooking from scratch. Write a list of exactly what you need and stick to it. Try shopping online - you might have to pay £3 - £5 for delivery but you won't be tempted by anything as your walking round the supermarket.
    HSBC £25.00 old credit card
Petrol £50.00 Could you get rid of your car?
Car Tax £ 15.00 (Starting next month) As above?
    Clothing/Going out £25.00
Make what clothes you have last now for the next 6 months. Then try to buy on ebay or charity shops. Have a good sort through your wardrobes and sell anything you havn't worn for a while.

    Thanks all...

GE is for GE Capital, actually in Mum's name but it's for 3 things we bought when we moved in to our house.

Have thought about re-usable nappies but can't afford the original outlay, they are expensive to start with.

Been thinking about the car but I rely on it so much, means I can get out and about with my baby. I've fought so hard to keep it, see my debt diary, but I realise it may need to go. Just worry if I do get a job I'll be restricted without it. Also, I try not to use it if don't need to.

Water meter - hmmmm trouble is we don't have a shower, so potentially could have 3 baths run a day which would make a water meter v expensive. Our landlord won't fit a shower but we're looking to move end of the year so that could change.

Food - this is for 3 people, 2 adults and a 17 month old. I do online shopping to stop impulse buying, been doing this for about 2 months now and has worked so far. I just go once or twice a week to get fresh fruit/veg and milk. Doesn't help I have about 3 stone to lose to need more fruit/veg etc.

Comet - again this is a joint thing with Mum, min payment is normally £13 but we pay £20 to try and reduce.

Clothing/Going out - I don't buy clothes, this is for my daughter and includes shoes for her which are expensive!! I do however try to get out at least once a month for a meal or cinema as being a single parent with mainly a toddler for company I crave a bit of adult conversation!!

DD's Savings.... yes I could not pay this for a while but I wanted to build up something for her for the future.

Think that's all answered for now...

Thanks again for the help xxx

You could buy a starter pack with 1 or 2 nappies in it or ask for a freebie from several different companies. Use them from the start of the day and then go onto disposables for the rest of the day which would cut down the nappy bill a bit. I used to use washables every other day as I found it difficult to get them washed, dried and aired in 1 day.

One minute your saying the food bill is for 2 adults and a baby and the next it's for a single parent?? Do you count an older child as being an adult?

As for nights out if your a lone parent have you thought about joining the local Gingerbread group? I used to run my local one and we used to do a monthly night out without the children and regular days out with or without the children which are either free or very cheap.

Sorry to confuse you - I live with my Mum (jointly rented house) but she works FT so it's mainly me and my toddler on our own. The food bill is my half, we tend to spend £100pm online for a big shop then approx £25pw on fresh food. Am working on cutting this down, esp as we still have lots of food in the freezer and last shop was done 25th Jan. So hopefully won't need to do another big shop for a while. I shop at Tesco too saving up clubcard points and use the online codes to get extras.

Scouring ebay for re-usable nappies - thanks for the tip.

    Thanks for the reply x
