Difference Between Stewingrecipe and Braising Steak??

This is probably a really daft question but is there any difference between braising and stewing steak??
I'm making a beef and ale pie and the recipe calls for braising steak but I have stewing steak in the freezer...
The recipe states you cook the steak in a casserole dish in the oven for 1.5 - 2 hrs.
Would using stewing steak be ok???
Many thanks in advance

Stewing steak is usually a bit tougher than braising steak so I'd just cook it for a bit longer than it says.. but it'll be fine.

yes - Braising steak is slightly more tender (tho its still useless in stir fries - I tried it). just cook for an hour longer than stewing and you wont tell the difference.
jeez I meant cook stewing for an hour longer than braising! a Senior Moment obviously! Apologies!
  • I thought the only difference was in the way the steak was cut?..I buy mine from Costco,or get a meat delivery pack...casserole/stewing steak is normaly cubed, but braising steak is thinner and sliced.
