How many rejections have you got?

I had applied for 6 jobs, 3 with an agency that I am just after finding out didn't exist, it was an exercise to get me on the books, I got rejection letters for 2 more without even getting to an interview and the last I have yet to hear but don't hold out much hope on that one either, sad thing is thats all I have applied for, out of options now.

Are rejection letter more common than even getting to the interview stage?

Oh, I must be privileged then.
  • I imagine you are tbh.... I've been (trying to) recruiting people for the last 18 months fairly consistently. All the jobs have gone via agencies and via own website only (not listed by my client on monster etc).

For each role I've probably received circa 30 CVs of which I've interviewed 20%. Those that didnt get interviews I simply said no back to the agency (only had 1 direct applicant for any of the roles and they got an interview). I know the most of those agents didnt tell the candidates. Those 30 CVs are just the ones that got through the agents screening process, I know they were using job boards for some roles and I imagine they probably got 300-600 CVs for those 30 they sent us.

There is a sheer practicality of sending that volume of rejection letters per job and then having to deal with people questioning why they were rejected.

I can only remember 2-3 people who asked for an explanation of why they were rejected for an interview (or at least only 2-3 that the agency came to me to ask why - dont know how many they simply batted away)

I understand that its a buyers market and that recruiters can't answer every application, but just put yourself in the candidates shoes for five minutes.

When was the last time you were job hunting? If it was more than 3 years ago then you probably did get replies of some kind from many of the vacancies you applied for, even if it was just an acknowledgement. Today, the amount of effort and sweat a candidate has to go through to find a suitable vacancy among the noise, clutter and sheer crap that's out there at the moment plus tailor their cv and application to suit the job description in an attempt to stand out from the crowd and then do it day after day for weeks or months on end is exhausting. To then hear nothing back can be soul-destroying at worst, impolite and unprofessional at best. Spare a thought for us job hunters ocassionally as you sit in your office enjoying the pay check.

Sorry to hear that your having issues OP, how did they now how old you are is it wrote somewhere on your CV? and if they were looking for a certain age range was that written clearly on the job advert.

I am typically job hunting every 9-18 months because of the nature of what I do. The last time was back in May 2011. I do certainly know how frustrating it is to hear back nothing, I am fortunate that it is rarely the case for me but the work I do will not have that many realistic applicants and rarely will I be a totally bad fit unless the job description is totally wrong.

The ones that annoy me more than those that dont respond at all to CVs are the ones that dont give responses after interviews. 3 years ago I had 5 rounds of interviews for one organisation and after the 5th one I never heard back from them.

As I said, I give a yes/ no decision on every candidate CV I see and that goes back to the agency. It is up to them to decide if they want to relay that on or not. For those I interview who are unsuccessful I will give a reasoning for it to HR who "clean" it and pass it to the agent.
