Edit - Miss the word 'long' out in the title, nice nebiw mistake!

Hello all, long time reader first time poster.

Been on JSA since May and been on a work program for the last couple of months. The company has found a ton of jobs working in a factory for alot of people. It is great on one hand as obviously it's a job and alot better than being on the dole.

However, the company wants us to work 48 hours a week rising to 72 hours on odd weeks with overtime we must do. It isn't a job I want to do and don't know if I can do it for long with it being standing up all day and alot of travel to get to for so long a week. Also, it cuts into my time to look for other work and gives me very little lee-way to actually attend interviews if I manage to get one without taking days off. We were told if we messed about early on i.e. take days off we would be out of the door.

I am well prepared to try my best at this job but how long would I need to work it before the Job Centre wouldn't be cross if I quit as I really don't know if I could stand (physicially) the job for months on end.

check with jobcentre ASAP, as i think this firm is exploiting you and others, if not paying for the time worked..

  • They have now changed what they want from us and want the week after next for me to work 12 hour shifts all seven days of the week, and normal shift patterns back the following week. Surely this isn't right?
  • Have you actually discussed it with them?

i mean, not just asking what your hours will be "next Week".

You are talking about shift patterns which will be unique to your organisation. usually if you work a 7 day 12 hr shift you find that fairly soon after you get 4 or 5 days off
