Source of Govt. Gateway User ID?

I have received an activation code through the post for self assessment. Where will the User ID be? They didn't send one of those c.c.-sized cards with it on.

Mine is a 12 character ID containing letters and numbers, although my mum's, which is newer, is all numbers. I've had mine for a few years so I can't remember the order they came in but the two letters arrived quite close together, so hopefully yours will arrive before the 31st.0
