Company car - benefit or not?

Hi guys,
I'm hoping one of you will be able to shed some light on my situation.
I started a new job a couple of months ago and was told the job came with a company car.
I was sent a fairly extensive list of cars to choose from which was a pleasant surprise.
I've come to the point now where I'm eligible to choose a car, however I've been informed that as the car isn't a benefit but a tool, I am restricted to the cars I can actually choose off the list I was given.
If the company are classing the car as a tool, will I be liable for company car tax?
Incidentally, the restriction is upon choosing an estate car as apparently anything else is unsafe to load things into the boot, if you can believe that.
Cheers guys.

If the car is available for private use it is a taxable benefit.0
