Student Loan coming to an end, being asked for the interest only.
I took out a small student loan in the 90's which I haven't paid back as I never reached the threshold. As I'm approaching my 50th birthday, I keep getting phone calls from Thesis Servicing promising me that they will write off the debt if I could just pay them the interest, which is about 250 quid. The weird thing is - they won't write me a letter with that offer in it, I've asked them several times telling them that I can't respond to the 'offer' until I've had it in writing.
I knew that if I reached 50 that the debt would be written off, and I assumed that meant the entire debt. Thesis Servicing have implied the following: that writing off the debt is at their discretion (it isn't) and that if there are any charges/interest outstanding, that they have to be paid in order for the remainder of the loan to be written off.
I can't find out if this is true or not, and I'm not happy to just write a cheque to Thesis Servicing for a 'deal' they are unwilling to commit to writing.
Would be grateful if anyone could help with information.
Many thanks
Athene
