Alernatives to fabric freshner sprays??

Options
I am somewhat addicted to using Febreeze every time I hoover, love the smell, but trying to cut costs now so is there a homemade alternative I could use that will get rid of odours and leave a lovely fresh fragrance?

Many thanks :)

Personally I use some drops of lavender in a spray bottle, topped up with water. (Put ten drops in there and it can also work as an antibacterial kitchen spray! It is just as antibacterial as Dettol :) and you could also choose your favourite smells like Orange etc :)
    :)
  • I like the idea of just using water and fragrance :) Nice and cheap lol

Are there any particular essential oils/fragrances that I should specifically avoid to avoid damaging/marking carpets and fabrics?

I just put a little fabric conditioner in water, very dilute.

  • Thanks Orkney, I normally use the supermarket brands at £1 roughly but may try the fabric conditioner tip and see how that works since I looooooooooove fabric conditioner!

Am I missing something here? Are people giving you ideas for fabric freshener when you iron? Can't see why you would spray fabric conditioner or oils on your carpets! Maybe it's just me. Trying really hard to study but my brain is overloaded and I keep erm, lurking on here instead of getting my assignments done!

Sorry, I just read post #3 and realise it is hoovering you are talking about. In that case, make sure you make any diluted solution very weak, otherwise you could end up with a slippy carpet if you use it pretty often.

  • As well as using a dilute fabric conditioner solution as a room /fabric spray.

You can add a few drops of essential oil /fabric conditioner onto a dryer sheet and pop into your hoover alternatively if you have a hoover with bags drip some of the above directly onto the dust bag.

Adding oils to a tub of baking soda, I put the baking soda into a larger plastic container (small drinking bottle) add the oils, use whatever fragrance you like. give the bottle a good shake and leave for a few days to dry. Pierce the bottle lid and you're all set to 'shake and vac'

My personal favourite is just to add dry cinnamon to the baking soda.

If you are a smoker or have cooked fish or burnt something in the kitchen, wetting a tea towel, adding some vinegar and waving it about the room will remove the smell.

I have tried all of the above and they work.
    I'm not that way reclined

Oops sorry I thought you meant spray too. I don't use fabric conditioner on my floor :o. Bicarb is nice for getting rid of smells, not sure what you could use to add one though.

Thank you so much for this idea. I hate the smell of fish and can't stand the smell of the house for hours after I cook it.
