Cabbing.

Hey all,

Just a very quick one about upping income.

Paid taxi contract bill this morning (and it’s my day off (!)), just spoken to controller in a large Uttlesford company about Fri/Sat night driving, as it’s the only two nights he’s out.

He states that on his fleet, drivers can turn over £400/night on Friday and Saturday, leaving (on their system of working; 40% to driver with no fuel) an extra £320/week working these two. This is more than some people earn in a week!!!

Whilst I‘m not interested in doing this, has anyone done it, and would they consider it?

Vika

Been thinking about whether to go for a hackney carriage license. However even if i pass the test, there are only a limited number of plates available around here. And it can reputedly cost up to 100k to buy one from another driver :s

That’s not the case in this neck of the woods, especially with another company having just taken the airport contract. They need drivers, there’s no test, and you’ve got your car provided on a 50/50 split (driver pays fuel and takes car home for additional 5%)

I don’t have the time/energy to do this, however for anyone that needs work, this is a good choice in this area!

My next door neighbour was a cabbie did airport runs he packed it in in 2010 as there is very little trade where we are now. My brother use to do it just as credit crunch hit UK and he also packed it in said there were too many drivers taking so little trade, he used to be on ranks but a lot of private car hire in our town. Maybe its different where you are

I packed in on the Cabs about 5yrs ago after 25yrs.
We use to think a good w/e night would be £100 perhaps more if there was something special going on. The only time i got near £200 was of a New Year. The cost of a Cab & Plate varies from area but you'll pay around £20k around here, but before going out buying something you may not take to call into the Licensing Office of your local Council and ask about getting a Badge, they'll give you an isea of what the Plates are going for, but for starters ask any driver does he know of any Collars going.

Bear in mind the extra insurance costs, the public liabilities you need etc.

This was why I mentioned the 50/50 split until you know this is what you want to do.

Another reason is that if something goes wrong with the car otherwise, it can get rather expensive!
