BR and Npower

Hi.

I went BR in October 2011, and about 3 weeks prior to doing it, I switched energy providers and included their debt in my BR. They mucked me about for several months (not cancelling, setting me up as a new customer etc), and have sent me a final bill this month. Shouldn't this have been included in the BR? And can I call them and tell them to include it? They didn't seem to quite understand what was going on last time I called, and I ended up having to speak to a manager as they hadn't dealt with a BR case before.

Thanks

Did you speak to the insolvency team?

If you did and they're still causing drama, just send a letter via recorded delivery to the insolvency team letting them know that you'd included the amount in the BR.Im actually surprised that they're giving you grief because, when i went BR,i phoned E'on and told them that my debt with them was included in the BR and it took them five minutes while i was on the phone for them to close my old account and set up a new account for me.

If they're not listening to you, send Npower a letter and make sure you send it by recorded delivery.

    All the best..

Hi there Tiny, sorry to hear you've had problems with NPower. I switched to them just a few weeks before going BR too. All went smoothly and I think I already had final bills from my previous provider by the time of my OR interview, had no trouble whatsoever.

I concur with Yesican, send a letter with a copy of your BR Order to the insolvency department via RD, that should sort it out for you. Also send a copy of the final bill to the OR if you like, just as a heads up of the amount.

  • Thank you - I will call them this afternoon, and if need be, call my OR too. Bet she's fed up of me by now :)

They really took me round the houses over it - they kept sending a gas man round to change the meter to a prepayment one, and I had to keep sending him away, explaining I wasn't even with Npower anymore! Think he came three times in total. And even now, I only have the final electric bill, not the final gas one. They really have been quite useless over this!

I apologise, I thought you went to NPower from elsewhere as I did, lol.

Sounds like they find it hard to let go of customers, not a good experience for you though.

Hope you get it all sorted soon anyway.:)

  • No sorry, I didn't make it very clear :(

I left Npower, and went elsewhere. I called them today, and they won't include it in the BR. Couldn't get the OR today, so will try again tomorrow.

I wonder if they won't include it because they didn't actuate the switch until after your BR? What date did the new provider take on your power supply?

  • They sent me through the gas part, which was nearly £500 for 2 months! So I've had to argue that, and now have to wait 6-8 weeks till they sort it out between themselves (EDF and Npower). I've yet to manage to get through to my OR to discuss it, mainly because I am waiting for their final final final bill as they mucked that one up somewhat. I spoke to the insolvency department, who basically said no, it was not part of it due to it taking 6-8 weeks to change provider. No mention of them extending that due to their own mistake of putting me down as a new customer!

If it can be included, then thats amazing. If it can't, I kinda understand why as its the energy I used whilst they were changing me over, but I still thought it would have been included.
  • if it was a debt signed before you went br i would say that wil be included.Just because you changed provider the debt was incurred before you signed for br so would fall into that pot so to speak.

I maybe wrong, someone with more knowledge than me may help further with this.

Any debt that existed at the time you went BR should have been included, regardless of the change of supplier. If you had taken a meter reading on your day of BR and run up NPower then they would have started a new account for you from that date. You would then have been liable for ongoing bills from NPower up until the changeover.

Unfortunately, without a meter reading from at least around the time of BR it will be very difficult to get them to determine how much was pre-BR debt and how much post BR bills. That's possibly why the OR has suggested none of it can be placed into your BR.

BUT, if you have a meter reading from around that time you may be able to get the oustanding amount split, albeit it could take intervention from somebody like the CAB to get it sorted.

    Hope that helps.

Do you take reads on the day of bankrupcy? Inbetween going bankrupt and changing you are only liable for.
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
