I do try and recycle as much as possible, but probably could be a bit better. I certainly know I could be better as reduce what I throw out anyway! Am currently desparately waiting for a under the sink compost bin which I ordered before Christmas as I know that will reduce our waste bin even more!

But I read today in the Rough Guide to Ethical Living that I live in the best district in the country for recycling, so I was quite proud!

But this thread has made me think about looking at what goes in my bin, so thanks Beany!

  • We also save all carrier bags for our shopping and for lining pedal bins rather than using bought pedal bin liners

Does this not mean they end up on the landfill anyway?

We used to do this but then bought a bigger bin and use recycled biodegradable black sacks.

All the other ideas are great but I reckon the real key is to reduce

I used to save everything too but have only so much space and use for hundreds of yoghurt pots and small plastic bags. The problem here is the limitations on what we can recyle here so I tend to buy with this in mind and no longer use plastic bags and buy my fruit and veggies loose. I make my own bread, yoghurt, biscuits etc which massively reduces the packaging coming into our house
If your composter is full can you get your hands on a wormery for kitchen waste?
  • Fruit peelings are fed to our hens and recycled into eggs :D

Wood ash from the fire is spread around fruit trees, and other flowering plants. The fruit yeild has really improved since we started doing this.

We don't have a use for ash from coal fires - worried that it may concentrate up heavy metals and other nasties, so it goes in the bin.

As for yogurt pots - I was horrified at how many of them we get through. I got a yogurt maker from Freecycle. We now make yogurt in glass jars, which are constantly reused.

I also try to recycle as much as poss.
my son loves making models so recycles cardboard boxes, toilet roll tubes etc in a "blue peter style fashion"

I keep the plastic canisters from rolls of camera film to put earrings in.( though dont use that many anymore with digital available!)

re use carrier bags for bin liners and when go shopping again

also use packaging from loo rolls as bin liners

print on both sides of paper when using computer if poss

reuse envelopes to write shopping lists on , and padded ones for ebay and amazon sales

re use all sorts of bits including broken jewellary on the cards i make

now kids have gone past bibs stage, im using them as cleaning cloths

old t shirts are great for making rag rugs

recycling is a full time job!!!!! but worth it

I use an old ice cream carton in the kitchen, but I have a compost bin outside.

My son was in your position and used a large emulsion container with a handle and a lid to take his compost to his friends.
