    Hi there

You say that you and hubby would like to lose weight can you let us all know what kind of things you normally like to eat and whether you like all fruit veg etc most things can be adapted to be lower in fat but still taste good and there are loads of ways to bulk things out as well to save on costs, but it will help if ypu give a better idea of the kinds of foods that you like.:)

It also helps to eat seasonally. Fruit and veg are always cheaper in season and at their best too, especially if you can buy locally grown rather than something that's been brought half way round the world in cold storage.

    Hi blushingrose

can I ask, do you usually meal plan for the week, or is meal planning/cooking from scratch all uncharted territory for you?

I only ask because I tried planning for a whole month a couple of times but find it quite tricky and I don't want you to be put off if it doesn't work out. I bought too much of certain things and it's been frustrating to have both money and cupboard space tied up while I slowly work my way through them!

If you're going to be learning how to cook lots of new things you will find there are some recipes you love and some you hate - and it would be a shame to have bought lots of stuff for the recipes you don't want to cook again. If you plan on a weekly basis you can be more flexible and adapt your meal plans as your skills grow.

As your confidence in the kitchen grows you will find that lots of recipes can be adapted and are great for using up odds and ends so that food won't be wasted. Risotto is perfect for this - you can make it with just about any vegetable, leftover meat, ham, cheese. As long as you have a packet of rice tucked in the back of the cupboard you'll always have a meal.

I find the weekly menu planning thread is a very good source of inspiration. people are always helpful in sharing their recipes too. I also keep a list of meal ideas - I jot down ideas when I come across them because I find my mind goes blank when it comes to making my shopping list!

let us know how you get on!
