09/10 and 10/11 are marginally cheaper, pity it wasn't 05/06 as that is only 382.20. NI does not get applied to your forecast until Jan ie 10/11 does not get applied until Jan 12 so he may have had another year waiting to be applied0

There is another option. He could register as self employed and voluntarily pay class 2 NI for a year, which is much cheaper at about £130 pa. I know someone who registered as a "Sage and Poet" and who declares the £27 in 2p pieces that he gets from reciting his great works on street corners on his on-line tax return.
Every year, he has one more year of full NI contributions.I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.
