Year end tax query

I have filed my tax return on-line and paid what I owe for 2010-11 but my summary wants me to also pay half of this tax years 2011-12 monies in advance - by the 31st Jan. My question is: if I do not pay this 'extra' will I be fined?

The payment on account is standard .... if the amount due for the year you are filing is £1k or more. Been like that (but a lower threshold of £500) since 1997. No penalty for not paying it on time - just interest at 3%.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
