Building up my credit rating again

Got made bankrupt in August 2008 and was cleared a year later. It is only now nearly 2 1/2 years later im trying to build up my credit rating. I was told at time of bankruptcy to close my Barclays account and open an account with Co-op which ive done i called Co-op last month to ask for a overdraft and/or credit card i was refused on both counts and said i had to be with them for 6 years till i could change my account and therefore apply for a overdraft and credit card.
Anyone had similiar experiences or any good advice as to how i could repair my credit rating?

Paul, unfortunatly you are going to get that all round from most banks until the BR drops off your file. People like Santander or NatWest have offered basic accounts to discharged BR which will give you more options later.
Make sure you clean up your credit files as well. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/677875
Then you need to start small and go for a catalogue that you pay off regularly. A Vanquis or Cap One credit card. Mobile phone. Get those nice green ticks going on your credit file.BSCno.87The only stupid question is an unasked oneLoving life as a Kernow Hippy0 -
don't go for a catalogue, that's (more than likely) additional spending rather than sticking to what you should be spending your money on (or not spending even), just my further two penn'orthFriendly greeting!0
