I got into some debt while I was a student a few years ago (credit cards etc) the total is about £3000. Once they stopped writing to me I never paid the debt off. I have checked my credit score as I'm hoping to buy a house in the next few years and my score is Bad. I was told that things get taken off your report after 6 years. Is this correct and is it correct even if they are not paid as they have all been on there for about 5 years. Just looking for some advice as to how/if to pay them to clear my report up a bit. Thanks

They are removed from your report 6 years after the recorded default, whether they have been paid or not.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

As Fermi says above, they will drop off after 6 years regardless of whether they are paid or not, paying them now won't make much difference. The debts also become Statute Barred after 6 years ( 5 in Scotland).0

Another question,,,,
I have just re checked my credit report and under the 'updates' column there are different dates. Does the 6 years start from the update date or from the date of the first missed payment or some other date?0
