my son has got a apprenticship after leaving school for a well known luxury car brand.and he's very gratefull to his small garage for takeing him on,and still paying him 1 week a month when he's not even there,and has to attend colledge.and for giving him the chance to get a good qualification.
If he gets £2.50 an hour then he is below NMW for Apprentices though.0 -

You should be, he is obviously driven enough and has had the opportunity to do the apprenticeship. I hope he achieves the qual and goes on to bigger things. As you say, you can now go onto Advanced Apprenticeships at Level 4.0 -

Not necessarily. If the company do their job properly and train the young person, then keep them on as a regular employee after the agreed training period, it seems fair.
A few companies seem to have a steady stream of "apprentices" passing through though, with no job materialising at the end of it, which IS scandalous. The job mentioned is only 6 months, so it's unacceptable IMO to pay less than NMW when it's clearly a temp job rather than a real apprenticeship.0 -
The question you should ask is why are local governments taking on these "apprentices" and I use that term loosely to work along side council employees who are paid considerably more than these young guys and girls. Slave labour and they should not be endorsing it when they know full well these kids will not be taken on at the end of their "apprenticeship".
The company in question recieves a grant from the government via a training body i.e local college to take on these young kids. The get a quite alot for the 16-18 year olds but half for anyone 18-24 hence they really do try to get the young 16-18 year olds.0 -
It is an apprenticeship if it meets criteria set out and follows the framework for that subject. The contract of employment must cover the period of the apprenticeship but no more and so a lot of organisations churn out apprentices, usually within trades that are traditionally more self-employed such as the building industries (Brick, wood etc.) and less so with the likes of engineering.0

The word "apprenticeship" has pretty well lost it's traditional meaning now and many Modern Apprenticeships are very similar to the old YTS courses with both the positive and negative aspects involved.0
