Does the tax on cigarettes pay for the whole of the nhs? Surely this isn't true, I've just been told this.

No doubt said by a smoker.
According to the last HMRC accounts they collected £9.5 billion from tobacco. Now I don't know the NHS budget but way more than that.0 -

Interesting link here http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/cigarette_tax_receipts_v_cost_of - seems to suggest that smoking-related NHS costs are well covered by taxation (£10bn tax v £2bn costs) - unlike alcohol which is a net loss (to the taxpayers), and who knows about all the other stuff the NHS has to deal with.0
