I find now the only reason I travel any distance any more is to airports and hospitals.

I very rarely travel anywhere to purchase stuff or avail of services - thanks to the internet

Everybody seems to be blaming the downturn in the economy for the retail strife, but I believe it's more fundamental than that. It seems the days of small business itself may be limited.

I agree, recently needed a new dishwasher, bought online from Dalzells of Markethill, free next day delivery and took the old one away! Never left the house!!!

However that was a great local business giving "old fashioned" good service but made easy via online for those at a distance.

Buy most of my clothes online but still drive to the big supermarket for my weekly shop.
Walk the dog from the house now, I used to drive toa different park and then get out and walk.
Petrol consumption is noticeably reduced but shoe leather is wearing out rapidly!

I had to commute to my last job and I always had the average mpg on display. My challenge was to maximise it. Windy days were bad for it, as were wet days. Anything over 60mph is deadly on fuel.

I used to pass a fellow commuter every morning doing around 55mph on the motorway. I'm sure it was a fuel efficiency thing. I wasn't quite so disciplined.

Definitely drive to the supermarket for the main shopping, but thats mainly because I can't get myself organised to do it online.

Do most of my clothes shopping online. I need a new washing machine, and have a dilemma over it, because for convenience I would like to buy it online, but part of me really believes in shopping with our local shops and supporting local business.

Am on maternity leave at the moment and at one stage one of our cars wasn't driven for about six weeks, as we were making an effort just to use the one (more fuel efficient!) car. I am seriously thinking of giving up work and becoming a stay at home mum because my commuting costs have gone up so much in the past few years that its not looking viable to return to work - if we could survive with only one car (which is only possible if I give up work) then the savings combined with the savings on childcare would all but make up for the loss of my salary, which is a bit grim!
