Class 2 National Insurance Tax - Deadline 31st Jan - Small earnings - Do I pay?

Basically, I'm supposed to be paying my class 2 national insurance tax by the 31st. I earn less than the threshold limit of £5000 something, which means I don't have to pay.

I've found this form online: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/cf10.pdf

Which is the form I need to print and send in order to receive a small earnings certificate. I don't know how long this takes, so I don't know if I have to pay anyway.

Also, is there anywhere I can obtain this form without printing?

  • When you first registered as self employed, didn't you get a small earnings exemption claim form? I sent mine off immediately and got the exemption doc quite quickly. That was a while back though, maybe things have changed.

  • No, I didn't get one. Either way, I have the form, but I need to know if I can just send it in the next couple of days and everything get sorted, despite payment being due in a week.
  • bump, anyone know?

Why is payment of Class 2 NIC (£2.50 per week usually paid monthly/6 monthly via direct debit) due in a weeks time? I thought it was just Class 4 NIC (payable on profits in excess of £5715 and income that was due on 31 January. I would just fill in the form and send it off to HMRC quickly.

I had class 2 that were given deadline of 31st January - quarterly bill. I paid mine. I could get a small earning certificate but have decided to pay class 2 instead, as seems more beneficial.

I cannot guarantee that they still do this, but some years ago when I failed to renew my small earnings certificate HMRC sent a bill, but when I phoned to say I didn't make enough to have to pay NI they cancelled the bill and sent me a new certificate.
