I think that employees should get an extra weeks holiday in any year they have a birthday. That would be fair on everyone (except possibly the dead).

I used to work for BAE SYSTEMS and they used to offer an additional 5 days holiday when you got married. This policy was removed from their handbook, but most managers still agreed it. I had the extra 5 days holiday when I got married 6 years ago.

Damn, my now husband and I used to work for them. Didn't know this. Would have been a good stick to beat him with when he was dithering about asking the question!

I seem to recall the insurance company I worked for 30 years ago did this. One of my friends had an extra week from them twice in the time she worked there!

  • I'd say definately a Company Specific policy, certainly not law.

We don't get that but we can have up to 1 week paid "Dependant Leave" on top of holiday if say your child is ill. Also if a close Family Member dies they give you 2 bereavement days "at their discretion" which should be day they die or Monday and funeral day, which I think is quite good but hopefully won't need to take advantage of the bereavement one!

Best I can offer is two discretionary days for 'removal of household'. I had this when working for a local authority, asked about it and was told "no, you're only moving from one shared flat to another".

Are you sure your friend didnt mean 'can take three weeks holiday as opposed to 2.4 weeks holiday'

What some employers do (My old one did) is remove the cap on contigious holiday booking (Normally 2 weeks 2 days) for marriage (ie you could take up to just over 3 weeks)

    No extra entitlement tho
  • My employer agreed a flexible working arrangement in the year I got married to allow me to take TOIL for hours already worked, but this was based on my request to do so and would have been considered for anyone else for any other purpose had it fit within their job remit.
