in Cutting tax
Here is an interesting one.
I stopped paying Student Loan repayments in 2010/1 as I nearly cleared the balance and then after deductions were stopped I settled with the Loan Company.
The tax return asks me did I make repayments which I did and then of course the daft thing then takes my salary and works out a full years contribution and slaps a big bill on me.
Will ring the helpline - any ideas?

Yes - you need to continue and complete the SA with the system calculating the SLC on the full salary. Then follow the lead of the embedded link at post #6 on here :

Spoke to HMRC on two occassions and they are insisting I pay the amount which I do not owe and then will get it back eventually. This time I was able to get out of them there is a special student loan unit who may be able to help. It is like banging my head against the wall. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I will be more direct with them and ask them to stand it off then. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Finally sorted of sorts. There still is no way that they will not take the money I do not owe off of me! But if I write in to request an informal stand down it will be refunded.
Still is an utter joke. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
You do not need to pay it so don't.....ask for it to be informally stoodover, that is all you need to do.0

Messy it may be but it's articulated reasonably well as to how you get around it. Hence the link in post #2 as the content, from someone similarly affected, was clearly set out.
Blame Ministers for insisting HMRC bolt it on to PAYE/ SA after SLC made a complete mess of it circa 1997/8. Under pressure from HMRC - SLC now offer, from a few years ago, a DD facility for the last 23 months in order to collapse the loan tidily. You should have taken it?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
The questions on the actual SA100 form asks: "If you have received notification from the Student Loans Company that repayment of an Income Contingent Student Loan began before 6 April 2011, put ‘X' in the box"
Therefore is the answer to that not just don't put an 'X' in that box?
As you are not liable to make a student loan repayment I would not include it on the return at all as at the time of completion it has been fully repaid. It is more hassle than it's worth trying to get them to repay you the student loan!0 -

Don't do that, will just create problems further down the line. Fact is they were liable to pay ICSL prior to 5/4/11. And again, they do not have to pay it and then claim it back.0 -

No. The answer is contained in the links above - and distil to :
The amount of Student Loan repayment included in your end-of-year balancing payment cannot be reduced. But, if you think that the amount is too much you can contact us by phone or in writing and ask for a specified amount to be suspended from collection and informally stood over (an informal standover) pending confirmation of the amount required by the SLC. However, if any of that amount is then found to be payable it will attract interest and possibly a surcharge
