Job offer and JSA

Ive just been offered a job, subject to the necessary security clearances and reference checks..the thing is i havnt been told when my start date is or how long these checks are going to take..but i have to sign on and meet my personal advisor this wednesday...im not sure what to do, shall i just go and explain that to her? My form has to be sent back by end of next week and i can imagine clearances will take another week, so thats probs 2 weeks from now.

Personally i wouldnt mention anything to them untill you get an actual start date, and then contact them the day before you start (or the friday if starting monday) they have a habit of signing you off on they day you tell them, you could sign on a tuesday but not start till the monday, theyd sign youoff on the tuesday and you lose 5 days benefit.

They can't sign you off without a signed declaration, if you haven't a start date you don't sign off.
  • Ill just tell her the truth. The thing is because of this offer i didnt apply to a job suggested by them (a job with them in the jobcentre) so i hope she doesnt ask me about that.

All i can say is make sure that you sign off the day before you start, not when you sign on, unless of course thats the day before.

    btw congrats on the job.

If asked about the job that was suggested by them just say that the application is nearly finished (if closing date hasn't been and gone) or say the application has been submitted and your waiting for a reply.

Its up to you whether you say anything about this job offer, theres nothing concrete yet so it wont hurt to not tell them.

Good luck with the job offer.

If you have a job offer, but no start date you only need to show that you''ve been looking for temporary work since you received the job offer when you go to see your adviser.

For the vacancy you were submitted to, I'd mention this to your adviser and explain that you haven't applied yet because of this job offer. She might advise you to apply anyway, just in case your jobstart falls through, or she might mark your reasons for not applying down on your file/excuse you not applying.

As for payment of benefit, they'll pay you right up until the day before you start work - even if that's a Saturday or a Sunday. The length of your claim is important because you could meet the conditionality of JSA for a job grant - that's £100.00 for a single person - if you're eligible. That's a nice buffer to start your new job with. Google ".gov job grant" :)

I think your adviser will be really pleased for you and do everything she can to help you into work, and be helpful about the vacancy you haven't applied for. But, you should be honest with her so she can advise you correctly and get everything you're entitled to. Also, don't forget to ask her about your eligibility for claiming working tax credits - another buffer between benefits and work.

    Good luck!

You can sign off over the phone nowadays so no need to sign anything.

True but I was responding to the statement made that they might sign them off when they next sign on if they are told that there has been a job offer.

My sister had this, she was offered a job but needed to be CRB cleared before she could get a start date. In order to continue receiving JSA until she actually started, her advisor told her she had to keep applying for other positions. (and all the jobs she was applying for required CRB checks anyway) .

So you can tell your advisor about the offer if you wish, but you will still be expected to continue making job applications/attending interviews until you have a confirmed start date.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)
