Anybody in process of / thinking about joining forces?

As above, is anybody going through the recruitment process for any of the forces or thinking about it? It's something I am thinking about (raf), but just wondring if it's something a lot more people are considering with recession and lack of jobs out there etc..?

my 16 year old son goes in the army on april 22nd as junior entry and is taking an engineering apprenticeship as his job.

He has wanted to join for a while now, but I would only sign his papers at this age if he got a trade and not just going in as a regular soldier. I wanted him to have something that would serve him well in civvy street.

He doesn't take into account jobs or recession etc but for me I believe this offers him some kind of secure future.

He one day wants to live in Australia and he has picked a job which will suit that kind of lifestyle.

In times of recession application for the forces generally go up. At the moment you may have noticed that the forces are making a lot of people redundant, which has an impact on recruiting. Some trades are all but closed to applicants currently, so in theory your ideal job may not be available, check with your local AFCO.

I am ex RAF and its a great life. You get a good wage with your accommodation and food taken out , so what you get is spending money. The quarters are cheap should you ever marry. Overall its agreat job and regular wage, Something that alot of people dont have in civvie street. I dont think its so cut throat as civvie steet and its great for camaraderie.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, i noticed that many jobs are closed for applications. Only about 8 roles that are open. Thanks for the link, i will take a look.

i tried to join when i left school got a good enough score on the aptitude to get in the reme but failed due to poor eyesight now stuck working as a spark

the only thing thats made me depressed in my life was not being able to get in even if there is a war on at the moment

dont let the war put you off if you join the forces then going out on tour in conflict should be whats expected
join up get a trade and see the world

What's wrong with being a sparky, that's an excellent job to have.

The forces are able to pick the cream of the crop at the moment, too many applying

Or see 'the fields' of the world as my ex-forces DH would say

Hes seen a lot more since leaving I can tell you!

I dont see whats wrong being a sparky? Lots of DHs mate would love to have a skill like that so that they could leave, as lots of the stuff they learn for their jobs not are not applicable to civvy street.

Maybe its a grass is always greener thing?

i know a lot of people would love to retrain as a spark all well and good if there was enough work to go round unfortunatly the industry is flooded with out of work sparks like other industrys theres not enough jobs out there

Junior is in the process of joining the RN - and with the SDSR its a right royal pain in the backside.

tbh if the only reason you're thinking of joining up is because there's nothing else better to do then my advice is don't .......

What is SDSR?

I'm in twenties and have had steady job with same company for 7 years, it's something I considered when leaving school, but never had guts to do. Now working day in day out, I think there must be more to life. Doing decent job, seeing (some! parts) of the world, feeling like you are doing something worthwhile.... But i may be wrong. Just wondered if anybody else was in same sitution
