anyone done this? any tips? Thinking of selling cookies, bars etc, do you need to have a food hygine qualification or get environmental health involved ?

  • Yes I have recently looked into the possibility of selling chocolate produce. You need a food hygiene certificate. You also need to register as a food seller with your local council and have a kitchen inspection. Sorry.
  • hmm, what does the kitchen inspection involve?

Your local authority may have pages on their website which could tell you more. For instance, this is from Canterbury's pages

Don't quote me but I think it has to be more spotless than spotless.
Eat off the floor type of thing.
Got a feeling you may have to have specific chopping board for certain items....fridge has to be in tip top etc.

You would need to register your home with your Local Authority, you would also need to hold the Level 2 foundation food hygiene certicate. Check out the Food Standards Agency Safer Food Better Business for a Food Safety Management System, labelling and allergy advice. Your kitchen may require 3 water points depending on what type of foods you are planning on doing.

Public Liabiabilty Insurance is strongly recommended...!! your kitchen must be of a good condition that is smooth and easily cleansable and if your not planning on selling to the final consumer (direct sale to the person) you may come under the approval process.
