Mixed Citrus Fruit Marmalade - Lime peel problems!

I've been making mixed citrus fruit marmalade for years, often in a microwave but the lime peel in the batch I've just made is so tough that it's like leather and almost tooth-breaking. Any ideas what went wrong and how I can avoid this happening in future? Have never had this happen to me before. And how can I best remove all the lime peel and restore the marmalade to an edible form?
