Hello, I'm new to the forum and have had a look around but just need some advice.
Yesterday I had a phone call from Robinson Way. The bloke was quite abrupt asking for me by name and when I asked who was calling he asked me to confirm my details. I told him that I wouldn't confirm anything because I didn't know who he was or why he was calling. He just kept saying he was from Robinson Way.
He then asked if I had received a letter from them and i replied no. He said he would send a letter and that was that.
Anyway, this morning I have a letter from them saying that I have an unpaid account which they are trying to recover.
Now I have a feeling that this is from a very long time ago........probably 1997/1998 actually. I bought something on HP from Dixons.........but and this I feel is quite important, Dixons never gave me anything to set up a DD, they never sent me any correspondence for payment and because I couldn't make any kind of payment, I didn't. I no longer live at the address, moving out over 12 years ago.
I haven't done a credit check but when I applied for a loan 3 weeks ago, I was turned down.........does this mean I have something on my credit report.
I presume that the debt is SB and I'm thinking that the template letter on this site is my first option. Is this right?
I've even unplugged my home phone because I don't want to be harassed by them. Also, I am ex-directory so I want to know how they got my home contact number, is there anyway of finding out, without speaking to RW? I'd love to know how they got my address as well.
Thanks for any advice.

Did he tell you when it was from or anything else to make you think it was a debt from that long ago?Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

no, nothing at all and it doesnt mention on the letter when the debt is from.0

In that case just a generic "prove it" letter might be best for now.

If it turns out to be yours but statute barred, or still disputed and statute barred, then of course a follow up would be from here:
