Change to my tax code HELP :-(

Hi all

I have been in the same job for over ten years so no changes to employment etc and out of the blue got a letter from the Tax Office this morning saying that my tax code for 2012/2013 was BR.

I don't understand why I have received this letter and what the implications of this tax code are.

My tax code on my salary advise is 747L.

Help, I don't understand what is happening.

Thank you
Emma

have you taken on a second paid job? BR is the 'emergency tax' code, also used for second jobs

The coding notice should say why they have chosen to allocate BR, can you tell us what it says? It's probably a c*ck up that you'll need to ring them about the get corrected.
  • The letter says:

You need a tax code so ''employer's name'' can work out how much tax to take off the payents they make to you. Your min HM office has worked out your tax code for you other employment(s) or pension(s) but we both need you to check that our inforation about you is correct. The wrong code could mean you pay too much, or too little tax. Please keep your coding notices, you may ned them if we send you a tax return.

We have asked ''employer's name'' to use code BR for this year, which means you will pay tax at 20% on your ''employer's name'' income.

As I said nothing about my circumstances has changed, no second job, I've made no chages to my pension.

The emergency tax code is not BR.

It's not about contributions to a pension, it's about receiving a pension.

If this coding notice relates to your employer, then phone up HMRC and query it.

You need to ring your tax office and enquire about the reason for the change - see thread https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3740987 particularly post 22 and 23 - any chance the same thing has happened to you?

There's a definite clue in there? HMRC are of the impression you have other income streams.

It is very unusual to receive a Coding Notice for 2012/13 (i.e starting from 6 Apr 12) as early as Jan 2012 - normally these would be issued only a few weeks before or after the tax year start date.

Prior to the new PAYE system - they were always issued mid Jan. From memory they all had a static date of circa 18th Jan. Then the new PAYE system pushed them back a bit .... obviously they're now realising than Jan / early Feb is optimum in order to get queries out of the way prior April? There's been a number of threads indicating people have started receiving them.

    From HMRC:
During January, February and March HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) will be sending out new tax codes for 2012-13.
