If you are confident that its statute barred - then if you send the SB letter template they have to stop chasing - or to prove that the debt is not statute barred.

On a SB debt the debt still legally exists but they cannot take you to court to enforce the debt (or rather they can try to take you to court, your defence would be its statute barred).

Template letter and factsheets (which are worth reading and making sure you understand them) here - Statute barred debts and the Limitation Acts

if your sure its statute barred then write and tell them so

if your not sure then ask ndl for an opinion http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/england_wales/factsheet.php?page=25_liability_for_debts_and_the_limitation_act

Send them the letter if you are certain its more than 6years.
Don't speak to them by phone.
What rubbish can then panic you with? If they write back and say anything other than they accept its statute barred then come back for more advice. And don't pay them anything unless they can provide satisfactory proof that the debt is not statute barred.
