Hi
Not sure if this is the the most appropriate forum-hopefully it is.
Shortly I'm off to Los Angeles/Las Vegas, Mrs Scotch fancies a new digital camera.
The question,
1. Is it better to buy it here ,hopefully get a few discounts/codes
2. Buy it at Duty free at airport(Terminal 1 heathrow)
3. Buy it in the US,if so where
4. If i do buy in the US is there any problems with voltage etc.
Sorry it's all a bit long winded.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Fry's Electronics in Las Vegas is tremendous for bargain prices. That's the place that the Americans themselves make for. The place is huge and you could spend almost a full day there.
You can do a google search and check their prices.

when i went to florida, i noticed some of the cameras were more expensive than over here. i would look through argos, other camera brochures with exactly what you want take that page with you, so you can fully compare prices and models etc....0

Buying here may save you hassle if you need to call in any warranty that the unit comes with (which may be country specific) or power supply problems.
Use froogle.co.uk to find the cheapest UK prices, and look at prices for models on ebuyer.com, which is one of the cheapers UK suppliers I know.
If you buy in the US, look at the power supply and make sure it says 110-230 or 110-240V! If it's 110V only then you'll have to buy a transformer here for 30+ quid which might wipe out any savings you made.
If there's a CostCo where you are that would be a good deal, but just a regular Walmart will probably save you some money. Or if you're staying where you can have stuff delivered you could use pricewatch.com and get it ultra-cheap by US mail order!0 -
In general US prices should be cheaper but watch out for scams - a lot of places advertise cheap prices but don't have any stock
http://www.parkcameras.com/ is a good Uk source
In general the better makes will offer world wide warranties but it might be worth checking
There is some US branding (eg Canon digital Rebel and Konica Minolta) which will make it difficult to resell over here. A few Sony itemsa aren't sold over there (eg T3)
http://www.steves-digicams.com/ is a good US review site and features good revies for anyoneTANSTAAFL !0 -
Might be worth you saying what camera, or type of camera, you're interested in. If you want a top quality super zoom with image stabilisation, but which fits in your hand, you MAY be lucky and find there are still a few Panasonic FZ3's around at £199.99, which is an amazing price for this camera. Check out the grabbit board. This was a very popular buy. Perfect holiday and day to day point and shoot, but with decent manual features if you want to use them. I guess you'll need to be quick. This is cheaper than US and none of the VAT/Duty problems when you bring it back.
If you're after the next logical step up, something like a DSLR Canon 300d (Digital Rebel in US) then you will get that cheaper, excl. VAT/Duty, but it is also available with discount code from, I think, Dixons or Curry's at below £500. SLR Lenses are much cheaper, so long as you don't have to pay VAT/Duty when you get back.0
