The link you have provided was very helpful. Thank you.
However, my confidence in HMRC is pretty low. There is nothing on the self assessment return that ever mentions the CSL1 form which clarifies the fact you can request an 'informal standover'. In fact all the self assessment says on the subject is:
Please enter in this field the total amount of student loan repayments deducted by all employers.
The next time the student loan position is mentioned is in the final calculation when it tells you how much tax you owe! Again, no mention of the fact you can request an informal standover. There's not even an explanation as to how this 'underpaid tax' is calculated!
The way the self assessment form and accompanying explanation is provided on the self assessment pages is clearly designed for one purpose, and that's to get you to pay the money up front!
In regards to being able to repay the final instalment of the student loan by DD, the first time I ever heard about this was today. I have all the correspondence from the SLC regarding my loan (a copy is being sent to HMRC to explain why I'm requesting an informal standover) and nowhere does it mention the ability to pay by DD, let alone any advantage of doing so. The only place I've ever seen it mentioned is on form CSL1.
I'm sorry, but from the evidence I've seen (the leading manner in which they frame the student loan question to encourage you to pay, and the lack of information on the form for those who have repaid the loan) makes me very suspicious that it's a deliberate attempt to get as many people paying upfront as possible.
All they need is a simple link to CSL1, or a field in which to inform them that you've already repaid the loan.0 -
If you had clicked on the '?' mark on the SLC area of the SA Return - it would have identified what you needed to do.
The info is there - but possibly not exactly in your face. I'm aware that SLC was bolted on to both PAYE and SA in haste and under pressure from Ministers. So I agree it's not exactly seamless.
The Direct Debit now offered, for the last 23 months of the loan, is HMRC pressure on SLC to attempt to head off some of the complaints at the untidiness around completion of loans. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
