its not the romantic place or experience people think it is:(
its akin to a cattle market, one in one out:(

That's a bit harsh! Some people on here (the wedding board in particular) have been married there (not me, by the way) and absolutely loved it.
In my opinion, a wedding in Paphos, Cyprus that I went to was like a cattle market as you describe above but I wouldn't immediately say that if someone asked what it was like!0 -
That's a shame that you didn't have a good experience there Midnightraven3. I've been to a wedding at Gretna and it was one of the lovliest weddings I've been to!0

Forget it, it is totally over-commercialised.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Where were the weddings? At the Backsmiths forge or elsewhere?
Some places are very commercialised but there are some venues which are lovely, we visited a number of them a few years ago.
OP - no chance of just turnng up, it takes a couple of weeks for the marriage schedule to be sorted and registrars are always very busy so you would need to book one of them well in advance as well.Cross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219. You cant just turn up Im afraid. I used to work in gretna for a wedding photographer and yes two particular venues are one in one out. However, there are others which are lovely and far less commercial, it is all a question of preference and worth investigating0

Don't think you can just turn up anywhere for a marriage can you, as the banns or notice of marriage have to be given?
Here is a linky to marriage in Scotland

I got married on the Isle of Skye. I live in Shetland. I did everything over the phone. Had to post forms back and forth to the registrar.
