i have tax code 144 L X WHY IS THIS NOT 747L ?

HI I HAVE JUST RECENTLY GOT BACK INTO WORK BEEN UNEMPLOYED FOR PREV 18 MONTHS , tax code 144LX can any one tell me why my tax code is this ?,thought you was eligible for 7479 pounds tax free in a tax year i only made 2500 on jobseekers ..
i have a friend whos code is 747 LC
he also been out of work , but only since last april 2011 , i am getting taxed on my earnings , he gets no tax charged ... i dont understand this?
why is my code 144 and not 747 also?

    Letter Reason for use L For those eligible for the basic Personal Allowance - 747L for the 2011-12 tax year. It is also used for 'emergency' tax codes (read more in the section 'If you're on an emergency tax code')

    HMRC should have sent you a letter explaining how your tax code is arrived at. If not, give them a ring and ask them to review it.

    The X usually denotes a Mth1/Wk1 tax code which is non-cumulative.

    Did you hand in a P45 or complete a P46 when you started?
