SSP and Two Weeks In Hand, Advice Needed Please

Hi, I've been signed off work for two weeks, but I'm worried they will only pay me SSP, I can't get through to payroll, (I think they only work 3 days a week) does anyone know if I should be paid for what I worked, I work two weeks in hand, or just the SSP until I am back at work, and if there are any rules/laws about it? I'm worried because I have my two girls birthdays next week and I am skint enough already. Help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • Depends what the company scheme is. If they only pay SSP, then yes you'll only get SSP for the days you are time - when you get paid makes no difference to this.

If the company pays full company sick pay, or a proportional one, then you should get that. There is usually a 'discretionary' get out clause for this though, so you still might or might not get it.

Does your contract/staff handbook mention SSP or other sick pay?

  • Thanks for your reply, I know I will only get SSP for the time I am signed off, I'm only worried about getting paid decent money for this week, I don't mind getting the SSP after that, that is what I expected, but it seems to make sense that, if I'm working two weeks in hand then I should be paid for those two weeks in hand and then recieve SSP for two weeks after that.

I'd say it depends when your payroll is actually run.

With us, we notify payroll of any changes by the middle of the month, and then we get paid on 25th, but for the whole month. So if you go sick after the middle of the month, we have to pay full pay and adjust it the month after that.

You'll have to wait and ask, I'm afraid!
