Tax refund help, please!

Hi all
This may be in the wrong place but I hope it will be seen and someone can put my mind at rest. Sorry it's long-winded but I don't want to miss out any details which might be important.
I spent last year temping or on JSA whilst looking for permanent work. From October until the end of the year I temped through an agency with an outsourced payroll function. As my previous agency didn't send my P45 in time, I completed a P46.
As I ticked the box re 'having had another job since April and/or claimed benefits', I was automatically put on BR tax code on a Week 1 basis.
In November I sent my now-received P45 to HMRC and they sent a coding notice to my agency (confirming 747L). This was sent to the payroll people but they didn't change my tax code until mid-December (claiming they couldn't as they didn't have a PAYE ref?).
The agency intervened and I was eventually put on 747L but still on a Week 1 basis.
I have since been in touch with HMRC, sent them my P45 from the Jobcentre and asked for my overpaid tax to be refunded. This has not yet happened.
From 1st January I stopped temping and was made permanent with the company I've been with since October. I've had to fill out a P46 again so will be back on BR this month. The agency's payroll people have said they can't send me a P45 as they don't have an Employers PAYE ref. Again the agency intervened and said they should be using the agency's own reference.
My question is - if the agency finally send my P45, and I confirm to HMRC my now permanent employer's details, references and my salary etc, is it likely I will be taken off the Week 1 basis and get my refund anytime soon?! After all the hassle with this I can't face waiting until I get my P60 in April or May, then waiting 6 weeks for HMRC to deal with it!
Thanks in advance :-)
