Slow cooker .... again lol

Options
Hi guys

I'm a single bloke and have just got a slow cooker to help cook batch meals to freeze and make life a bit cheaper and easier.

My question is, can I put dry beans etc.. in the cooker along with a stew?
i'm thinking about the dried broth mixture to add to chicken stock and veg.

Cheers
John

  • I'm no expert, my slow cooker is only a few weeks old, but it says in the instruction book
Dried beans (e.g. red kidney beans) must be boiled for 10 minutes before being added to the slow cooker. They're poisionous if eaten raw or undercooked.

    Hi John,

I've never put dried beans in my slow cooker (I buy the value tinned ones so that I don't have to soak them lol) but I have put both raw pasta and raw rice in it. I just bung it in an hour before serving and it cooks quike nicely. The first time I tried it with pasta was a revelation. I cooked it in a SC cheese sauce and it was fantastic as it absorbed the sauce as it cooked so I got cheesy pasta - nom.

Good luck with your new toy, I don't know how I coped without mine

Oh and I've put raw lentils in it as well for soup :o

If they are dried then you need to soak for 5 hours & boil for 10-12 minutes before adding them. They are fine to add straight to the sc if they are tinned.

We've been cooking them for years & not gone wrong following this advice.
