Hire Purchase problem - Black Horse

HI everyone!
I've been a lurker here for a few years, but this is my first post and needless to say, I would like some help from those with more considerable knowledge on this matter.
I purchased a car in late 2006 through Black Horse Finance. The agreement ran over 5 years (60 months) and officially ended in December 2011.
I have just received a letter from Black Horse this morning stating a closing balance of around £1200 which they want to be paid by the end of the month (jan 2012). I did miss a few payments (5 in total) throughout the life of the loan and made agreements to pay extra at other times to help clear the missed payments up.
I knew that I would have some sort of balance to pay at the end but taking into account the missed payments ( 5 x £163.11) which is £815.55, so I understand they are adding charges and interest to the final which takes it to the £1200 figure.
Now, I wish to pay, but I'm wondering what my best course of action is so that I can maybe reduce the overall figure and pay as little charges as I can or what is my best reply to their letter.
Any help is much appreciated.
Many thanks in advance, Mark.

Phone them up and ask if they will wave charges for a figure of around £900-£10000
