It's best to get that handbrake and brakes looked at anyway, because if they're that bad then they'll fail an MOT.

To say it shouldn't be on the road is a little OTT.
There's a maximum angle that the handbrake must hold the car at, if the carpark exceeds that angle, then that's the carpark owners fault really...............“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

As others have said as first accidents go it's not too bad, if you'd rolled back into another car it would be much worse

One thing I would recommend, even if you're not very mechanically-minded, is to buy a Haynes manual, all the jobs are rated by difficulty and it has a useful section if (and when) you break down of checks that can often get you moving again.
As others have said, adjusting the handbrake is very simple on most cars. Had to coerce the wife into doing it on hers as trying to teach her some mechanical basics - one screw, one spanner, five minutes and you're done
. Sounds like your brake pads are worn out though, this is the "screeching" you can hear as the wear indicators on the pads rub against the disks. I would sort this ASAP, otherwise best case your discs are ruined, worse case if one pad wears out entirely the car will pull violently to one side if you brake hard which is VERY dangerous. 0 -
Also a lot of gubbins on here about failing brakes. chances are the handbrake cable simply needs adjusting. Depending on the type of car this could be fairly straightforward.
I've had a handbrake adjusted at MOT time with no need for new brakes/pads and no advisories issued on condition either so it might be a cheap fix.
Worht getting it looked at by a place you can trust though. Note this probably doesn't include your local kwik-fit. If you know someone who is handy with a spanner that might do it!

If the handbrake on your car does not hold it on a hill when FULLY APPLIED I don't know how the hell it has an MOT certificate. Also, you could have just applied a lot of power and released the clutch fairly quickly, you may have gotten a bit of wheel spin but at least you would have stopped rolling backwards.0

Keep smiling honey, could have been worse and I'm sure we have all done something daft not long after passing our tests. For me I managed to hit the lights rather than the windscreen wipers and ended up flashing a car across my path.... on the plus side I discovered I could do an emergency stop

That was many many years ago and all has been fine since. Don't let this knock your confidence. As someone suggested go and find a quiet hill somewhere and just reacquaint yourself with hill starts just to make yourself feel better.
