I agree his comment was a bit harsh but this accident seems to have been caused by poor maintenance of the handbrake rather than a newbie driving mistake which most of us make. She admits the front brakes are squeaking too, so they probably also need attention. Shouldn't be on the road with dodgy brakes TBH.TrickyWicky wrote: »You're either a stuck up !!!! who's forgotten what its like to be a newlt qualified driver or you don't even have a licence - in which case you've no real right to comment.0 -
As above, if the brakes can't hold the car on a hill the car shouldn't really have been on the road.
No one's fault but your own or the car owner, a working handbrake will hold a vehicle on pretty much any hill. Mine used to be awful until I replaced the discs and pads, now it holds beautifully.0 -

I wasn't trying to say it was anyone else's fault....''Before you diagnose yourself with depression or low self-esteem, first make sure that you are not, in fact, just surrounded by a$$holes.'' :whistle:0 -
would definately get the brakes looked at. my handbrake was a bit dodgy last yr and the brakes were squeaking so took it to the garage. needed new disks and pads and he cleaned up the shoes in the back drums which sorted the handbrake out.
Ty not to worry about it hun, you kind of learn a lot faster from the mistakes you make. I remember once leaving my handbrake off and i must have parked on a very slight incline as 10 mins later i got a knock on the door from police as it had rolled off down the street. i'd only had the car 3 weeks. It was a very quick lesson and i've always left my car parked in gear ever since. I do blame it on the fact i wasnt well with a migrane tho and was already in bed when the police came
my very first car was a cinquento, i was driving down a one way lane at college and a wagon was coming up the wrong way and wasnt stopping so i had to reverse to get out the way and ended up scrapping one side down a wall. the wagon who had bullied me out of the way never stopped and my dad ended up having to put a new door on my car
which was the wrong shade of blue lol but thankfully not that much! 0 -

Thanks for your post. I guess you live & you learn. Im not going to let it put me off, just going to practice hill starts a bit more as others suggested (after braking system has been checked!).
Thanks for the supportive posts.

no definately dont let it put you off hun, once you have passed your test is when you really learn to drive, before that they just teach you how to pass your test

your have had a bump good,no one hurt even better,it will happen again, know you might not panic next time,
know you can start to get experience how to drive, not learning how to pass a test like you have been doing and driving like your doing your test.
know get back in the car and have a drive round and stop been silly,
tell your Mum when she's home let her blow a fuse .
your not on your own ,ive hit walls, skipps, cars ,even knocked a lamp post down in a hgv (still working out how it jumped out on me
)and should know better there or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff0 -

Yikes! Bet that was embarrassing!
I drive an auto so don't have to worry about using the handbreak as I just whack into park and that locks the gearbox so the car can't physically move. I have to be very careful though when I use my OHs car as its a manual and I've been known to almost forget a few times - luckily with the OH in the car to yank it up for me
The only time I use the handbrake in the auto is on a hill otherwise when you let go of the brake pedal the car rolls forward putting strain on the gearbox - put the handbrake on and if it starts to fail it'll at least move forward slowly for the park brake to lock up. 0 -
I'd call it a result, if the car's fine and you didn't hurt anyone with only minor damage to something else. I imagine not many people can say that about any of their accidents, let alone their first. I expect you're doing fine, even if you are still a little early in your driving development.
I don't know how steep this is, but it can be useful to find the biting point whilst on the brakes. But then I'm used to a torquey diesel that probably could hold on the clutch without touching the accelerator where a small petrol (if that's what you happen to have) might not. And it won't be as helpful as getting your handbrake cable tightened.0 -

Ha ha, Yeah just a bit. Never did find out whether the owners of the building claimed against my insurance. It hit the corner of a corrugated building and the dent is still there 7 years later. Also took out a bollard on the corner of the street too! Oops0
