a question about an email response from an employer

When you get an email response stating they are looking at the applications and may get back to you, do you leave it or email and say hope to hear from you?

I think it depends if it is an automated response or not. So, if you applied on line and it turned up straight away, then it's automated and you may as well not bother to reply. But if someone has got in touch with you directly, then I think I'd send something along the lines of 'Thank you for letting me know, I hope to hear from you soon'. Short, polite and with enough certainty that they will get back in touch with you, without being over confident. And it gets your name seen again, which is never a bad thing....
