credit file, late payments and mortgage

HI

i was wondering if any one has any idea about credit files. I have some late payments on file over 2006 - 2008, no defaults . Do these totally ruin chances of getting a mortgage ( got a 25% deposit ) also do they drop off 6 years after you get them or 6 years after you close the account as some stayed open for a couple more years. Only asking as moving house is the reason im pushing to get this debt paid off then i am moving to a lovely house, not seen it yet but got a year yet !

got to say pretty impressed that not one single late payment logged after 2008 !

The defaults will drop off after 6 years. If you no longer use the accounts its worth closing them. All helps to build a better picture of you as a potential borrower.

sorry might have worded wrongly. I dont have any defaults just late payments but some are over 6 years and still showing so was wondering is it 6 years from the late payment or 6 years from when the account closes.

  • They should come off after 6 years - but sometimes it takes about a month or 5 weeks to update.

I had a wee look at it tonight and ive got some from 2005 still showing and it says 6 years from when account closes. If you had late payments and never closed the account would it stay on your file indefinitely

Contact the Credit reference agency who are reporting the information and tell them it's over 6 years old. I'd also find out who the person titled 'information commissioner ' for the company is and write to them pointing the information out to them. They have to reply within set time and guidelines.

i just received confirmation from equifax that a late payment will remain of your account for 6 years after the account is fully closed, defaulted or written off which is a bit pants really !
