whats the worst that could happen am i in trouble..

i started a job approx a year and a half ago, cards in (or so i thought) i have never recived a payslip,p60 or anythink else. i dont no how this works to be honest just got told i was on £9 per hour after tax i would take home £296 and £296 is what i currently get into my bank each week. a few days ago i get a letter from tax people, basicly saying were have i been since leaveing my old company. a year and half ago. i phoned my boss who says hes been paying it. so i rang them and they say they have recieved nothink. same with the natinal insurance not a penny.

am i in any trouble. i thought my tax was getting paid and i never questioned why i dont get a payslip as my boss isnt the fizzyest can in the fridge i thought getting paid in the bank was enough

sorry for the bad spelling in advance.. any advice would mean alot thanks

Did you hand in a P45? Or complete a P46 when you started there?

Normally you will get credit for deductions made - even if not paid over to HMRC. But the absence of payslips leaves you a tad vulnerable.

    It's HIS responsibility not yours.

Phone HMRC and talk to them again, explain your situation - your employer can wriggle, but unfortunately he hasn't much room. Did you get given payslips? Paid by cheque or cash? Can you prove what you have been paid?

The P46 is for the situation where you don't have a P45. You complete it - your employer sends it to HMRC. You need to clarify your situation with HMRC - their responsibility to ensure the employer operates PAYE correctly.

But it's wise to push for payslips in order to protect your back. Leaving it 18 months isn't wise.

on my bank statements it says his company name. but can he not say thats my total before tax. if he wanted to be funny? sometimes hes paid me cash tho (not much but he does) but still the £296 as he pays my tax or so he says. but never a pay slip

I think that you need to write to HMRC and explain exactly what has happened. CAB might be prepared to assist - make an appointment with an adviser.
  • my boss isnt the fizzyest can in the fridge - love that, by the way.
