Thanks for the replies :) @getmore4less- yes, that is exactly my calculation too which is why I put £25k-£30k in my cover letter as requested in the job vacancy ad. I would be totally happy with £25k!! :D I'm just a little scared that they're going to turn around and offer me £22k and I won't know how to negotiate up :-S

@Acc72- yes I know the offshore salary is going to be much more as it's "compensation" in effect for the fact that you're working away 2months at a time in the middle of the sea... However, the equivalent onshore position would be a land geophysicist with a typical starting salary of £24-30k with a MSc, and this office position is one step up from that as it involves the actual production of reports and charts/maps for clients (or that's how I look at it!) :)

@somethingcorporate- because it is an internal vacancy I'm led to believe the process will be fairly informal. My boss already knows I want the job and has basically offered it to me, I just had to go through the formal CV and cover letter application to satisfy the management above him. I was fine with that, as it gave me more of an opportunity to put in writing what I believe I have to offer!

    Ah well, fingers crossed...

    Just a quick update:

My boss very informally told me today that as nobody else had applied for the vacancy I have the job, with a salary of £23,500...and he says he will try and get me a big payrise in November (when our annual pay review is). The reason it isn't higher is because he has to keep my salary behind someone else who started at the company a year ago, which I can appreciate. I think that because I want the job so much I will take it, although it will require some calculations to see if I can live on that amount! And perhaps a clause written into the contract that it will increase by X amount in November... But pretty happy :D
  • Very unlikely to get that clause added and not likely that it will lead to a increase in November.

Personally accept the amount u have got, if you get any more in November then its a bonus!
The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

Thanks Googlewhacker- it was just an idea. I know bonuses/payrises are not a guaranteed occurrence!

I think they are trading on you being keen.
But if they need someone and no one else wants it you have an edge.

    Iwould negotiate further

I would reply with a bit of a laugh, so you are going to under pay both of us, they are probably due for a pay rise as well.

I know I wont get as much as I would if I carried on doing offshore but if I carried on in my old job with no offshore I would get £25k, this is not really enough I need to think about it.

Can't remember if this job is higher skilled than the on shore part of your current job, if it is remind them.

I guess another option is for you to still do some limited off shore work if that is an option or can you do a final stint of shore to boost the income enough to take the cut for a year.
