Going abroad

Hi

Not sure if this is the place to ask this but here goes.

I am leaving next week to go abroad to look for work, but I don't quite understand what I have to do regarding hmrc.

Currently I am receiving income-based jsa which I will cancel before I leave, but I understand that I may have to pay uk tax on what I earn abroad, is that correct?

I am going to look for work as soon as I arrive, whether I find a decent enough job will determine how long I will be there for, if I don't Ill come back.

I read something on the hmrc website regarding working abroad but I'm not sure how I fit in.

Do I need to inform hmrc prior to leaving the uk, even though I won't have a job, or do I only tell them when I do?

I am a British Citizen who will be going to another EU country, if that helps.

Sorry if this makes no sense, I'm good at that:D

  • I think to be eligible for JSA you have to have been resident in the UK for a consecutive amount of time. So if you returned you would possibly have to wait a few months to be able to apply again.

If I'm wrong, someone will probably correct me in a minute :)

If you're working abroad, you'll normally have to pay tax in the country where you're working.

If you're away for a while and want to claim benefits when you return, you'll need to pass the Habitual Residence Test.

You may have already thought of this but don't forget to make arrangements for your healthcare whilst away as the EHIC is no longer valid if you're not a UK resident.

    Thanks for your replies

How long would I have to be abroad before the UK see me as a non-resident? I mean if for example I find work and stay for 6 months what would happen when I come back to the UK, does it mean I have to re-establish myself as a UK resident even though it wasn't a permanent move?
